The Book Diary

Fifty Shades Darker by E L James

Fifty Shades Darker - E.L. James

My expectations for this were higher based on the ending of Fifty Shades of Grey and this book definitely met them.

I think that E L James realized that she was over killing this with all the extremely descriptive sex scenes and finally decided to tone it down a bit. That's something that I really like since okay we get it Christian and Ana have an insatiable sex drive, can we just get on with the rest of the book? There are more parts when the author lets you know that they are going to have sex but doesn't go into detail and just leaves it at that (thank you).

Another thing that I really enjoyed was that the story line isn't so based on Twilight, it becomes its own thing and it's a relief since in Fifty Shades of Grey that made me cringe. Overall, if you've made it to the second book, congrats! The first book deals with a lot of issues that can be hard for some people to deal with but this book explains it all, so if you're curious you should read it.

Anyway, I'm off to read Fifty Shades Freed because shit's getting gooooood. Happy reading! :D

To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

To All the Boys I've Loved Before - Jenny Han

I. NEED. MORE! So how am I supposed to wait until 2015 to read the sequel?? 2015!!!

I honestly did not expect to love this book as much as I did. I read it in one sitting and now I'm suffering from cutesy love story withdrawals... nooooo! I really liked the distraction from what I first thought was going to happen in the book very sneaky I must say (hehe).

The relationship the main character has with her sisters is just admirable. I've never read of siblings that have such a close bond. I love it! I also really like how the whole book didn't just turn into a bunch of drama as soon as Lara Jean found out her letters were mailed and that each boy had a different reaction to what she had to say to them in her letters. It's different from other books I've read about someone's personal thoughts suddenly getting revealed to others. Also, the cover is amazing. I know they say not to judge a book by it's cover but... don't we all like a pretty cover? I mean, you gotta admit it's definitely a bonus especially if what's inside is also good.

But, as much as I love it, I do have to admit that the story is pretty predictable at some points which is what is making me not give it the full 5 stars. It's still the perfect cute and fun quick read that I was looking for after reading a sad book. And... I've never had to wait for the next book in a sequel (or trilogy/series) and I hate it but not really because it's a first and firsts tend to be exciting so yeah :D

So if you're looking for a fun/cute book to read this is the perfect book for that. Happy reading!

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher

I have seen this book many times before but I never read it and I don't know why. It's one of the best books I've read in a while. The last book that made me feel the way this book made me feel was Candy by Kevin Brooks.

So, if you don't know what this is about it's about a girl that committed suicide and she made a list of the thirteen things she thinks made her decide to give up on life. (I don't want to give too much away so I'm being a little vague and only disclosing small details and not any major details in the book) Anyway, after she commits suicide these reasons circle around to the people involved in her life that in a way caused her to give up.

I really enjoyed the way this was written. You get to experience all of this at the same time as one of the people involved in this and you get the same feeling of anticipation that he does. It's intense especially since you know what he's feeling throughout the whole time and you start to see things differently as he does... it's just... I think I need to read a sappy love story after this or something lol.

It's definitely not the darkest book I've ever read, but I think suicide is still a hard topic to read about... because ya know it's suicide and it's sad. Anyway, I give this five stars and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It just makes you see how sometimes things that appear insignificant can actually have a huge impact on at least one person. I feel like this is a must read for everyone.

So, while this is kind of sad I wouldn't exactly say everyone will cry during this. However there are a few parts where crying is mentioned so if you're like me and that kind of stuff makes you cry then you might cry, but it's not too bad. If you decide to read this I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and happy reading!

SPOILER ALERT!

Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James

Fifty Shades of Grey - E.L. James

So, I'm a little late on the 50 Shades bandwagon but I finally read it! I actually got through the whole book despite my discomfort with some of the scenes in this book *cough cough* the demeaning and overly erotic scenes. What else right?

Okay, so down to business: my thoughts on this book? Well, it was so obviously based on Twilight, I noticed from the beginning. The clumsy girl, the extremely attractive male that takes her breath away who's keeping a secret but she's drawn to him then he warns her to stay away but doesn't really want her to listen to him... I think I don't need to go on. That pained me, and that was before I went to Google and had my suspicions confirmed. Then the sex scenes started and I almost ran for the hills! Haha see what I did there?

Anyway, bad jokes aside I felt like I wasn't going to be able to get through the whole book. BUT WAIT, there's more! There was one thing about this book that just kept me reading, despite the very erotic and uncomfortable sex scenes that became so repetitive I actually started to suspect E L James just started to copy and paste some previously used sentences. Also, at some point I started wondering if Christian Grey had a bowl of Viagra for breakfast every morning... Anyway, the thing that kept me reading was the witty humor that showed through Ana and Christian's e-mails to each other. Honestly if a book was created on just that, I would so read it and be endlessly entertained. I actually laughed out loud on some parts.

Then, towards the end of the book, there were more of those sweet moments when Mr. Grey stopped being so Mr. Grumpy and less Mr. Horny-All-The-Time (but only a little bit, very little) and the book just became more enjoyable which in turn made me want to read more of the series. I'm actually really glad I read through the whole book before forming my opinion on it. It's still not the best book I've read, hence the two and a half stars, but I have higher hopes for 50 Shades Darker. I'm really hoping for less sex and more lovey dovey and more e-mails. And of course I really want to give it at least three and a half stars.

So enough of my hopes for the next book in the trilogy, I hope this review is helpful to some and I hope I didn't add too many spoilers. Happy reading! (whatever it is you're reading). ^-^
